In the moments immediately following a car crash, things can get chaotic and overwhelming. Although tension is high during these moments of crisis, it’s important that you keep a clear mind and gather the necessary information you may need to later pursue a claim. In this blog, our Hartford car accident attorney explains what to do if you’ve been involved in a car accident.

Safety Comes First

After the initial collision, be sure to take a few moments and assess the situation around you. Safety should be your number on priority, and you want to make sure you or other passengers in the car haven’t been injured. Seek medical attention for any serious injuries that need it. If you are able to move your car, it’s best to make your way over to the side of the road. You want to avoid discussing the accident with the other driver in the middle of the street, surrounded by ongoing traffic.

File a Police Report

Calling the police should be one of the first things you do after a car accident. When the police arrive, ask that a report be filed and take down the badge numbers of the responding officers. Typically, in the police report, the officers will include important information that may help you prove liability or negligence in your case.

Exchange Information

Don’t put off speaking to the other driver. You’ll want to take down his or her name, phone number, drivers’ license number, license plate number, insurance company information, and policy number. You’ll also want to take a few pictures of the scene of the accident and include skid marks, traffic signs, and the car’s damages. Having as much information as possible when filing a claim will prove to be extremely helpful.

Keep Conversation at a Minimum

You can ask to make sure the other driver and passengers are unharmed, but do not engage in any further conversation. Avoid apologizing or saying anything that can be perceived as an admission of guilt. You may not realize it, but you could be openly admitting to legal liability if you aren’t careful with your words. Don’t speak of the accident until you have a lawyer who is present.
